The Link Between Obesity and Sleep Disorders

The percentage of American adults and children who are either overweight or obese (Body Mass Index greater than 30) is increasing every day. Much of this is because many people are eating more (super-sized portions) and exercising less. While it is well known that obese individuals have a higher chance of having Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a condition where breathing stops and Oxygen levels drop during sleep, recent research shows that Obstructive Sleep Apnea can actually cause obesity because a person become so tired from lack of quality sleep, they become less apt to exercise or lead a more active lifestyle.

Obesity, by itself, when not linked to Obstructive Sleep Apnea, can also contribute to a sleep disturbance because the person may not be able to rest comfortably in bed because of their obesity.

Significant weight loss for obese individuals can lessen the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea or, in some cases, actually eliminate the problem. Diet and exercise are always the first option for weight loss, but maintaining significant weight loss can sometimes be difficult. Gastric Bypass Surgery can be an alternative way to achieve permanent weight loss. Bariatric Weight loss surgery can be performed at Highland Bariatric Institutes.
